Anthropic Claude Sonnet 4 and Claude Opus 4 are now in public preview in GitHub Copilot

We're thrilled to announce that Anthropic's latest and most advanced models—Claude Sonnet 4 and Claude Opus 4—are now available in public preview within GitHub Copilot! This exciting integration brings unprecedented AI capabilities directly into your development workflow.

What's special about these new models?

Claude Opus 4 is Anthropic's most powerful model to date:

• Excels at complex problem-solving challenges
• Powers frontier AI agents with sophisticated reasoning
• Available to Copilot Enterprise and Pro+ subscribers

Claude Sonnet 4 builds on the developer-favorite Claude Sonnet 3.7:

• Perfectly balanced for coding workflows
• Optimized for performance and practicality
• Available to all paid GitHub Copilot plans

Both models feature "hybrid thinking" capabilities, allowing them to engage in extended reasoning with tool use and produce logical summaries of their thought processes—making your coding experience even more intuitive and productive!

How to access these models

We're conducting a gradual rollout over the next few hours, so if you don't see the models immediately, please check back soon!

For individual users:

• Access these models through the chat and agent mode model pickers in Visual Studio Code
• Use them in GitHub Copilot Chat directly on github.com

For Copilot Enterprise administrators:

1. You'll need to enable access through a new policy in Copilot settings
2. Verify availability by checking your individual Copilot settings
3. Confirm that the policy is set to enabled for each specific model
4. Once enabled, the models will appear in the Copilot Chat model selector in VS Code and on github.com

You're right. Sorry about that. I was following the addition to Copilot via VS Code, and I didn't read well.

Hit the rate limit for Sonnet 4 after 2-3 prompts - pls fix

Not a good look for Microsoft - Cursor doesn't have the rate limit problem for Sonnet 4, only GH Copilot does. Hope my free trial doesn't go to waste!

There's no information on data retention policy for Claude Sonnet 4. The docs say that it's hosted by Anthropic 1P ("Claude Opus 4 is hosted by Anthropic PBC. Claude Sonnet 4 is hosted by Anthropic 1P."), but there's only information on Anthropic PBC:

opus 4 is only available in ask mode. sonnet 4 is a waste of time because of abnormal rate limits

I’ve successfully had two files edited by Claude Sonnet 4! Then I repeatedly get hit with Sorry, you’ve been rate limited. Claude Sonnet 4 is unusable at this point. Not a good look for GitHub OR Claude.

I have enabled it in the Github webui but as a non-vscode user I don't know where to go from here.

1. No, Copilot completion is now using a fine-tuned GPT-4o mini, as I recall. You can check the January GitHub Changelog for more information. Previously, it used a fine-tuned GPT-3.5 turbo.

Why do Copilot enterprise admins have defaults set to force admins actively opt-in to allow use of a new model?

This just creates unnecessary admin/work for no benefits and slows everyone down in an org for no good reason.

Sure, let them choose to enable that per-model approval setting for orgs that really really have a justification for it, but please make enterprise accounts have sane defaults.

Is there a reason these only show up in VSCode/only supported there? You finally did the work to bring the model selections to VS/Jetbrains/Xcode too, but is it still 2nd class for some reason despite having the infra for it?

I can’t really take advantage of Claude Sonnet 4 because I’m forced to use VS Code, while essential debugging tools like the Database Inspector and Device Explorer are only available in Android Studio. Thinking of cancelling the subscription.
